This is a breaking story, so we're just reporting on what is known thus far - but according to the Associated Press, Kim Gardner, the top prosecutor in St. Louis has decided to charge Mark and Patricia McCloskey with felony unlawful use of a weapon.
Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner announced the charges against Mark and Patricia McCloskey, who are both personal injury attorneys in their 60s. They also face a misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree assault.
Gardner said in an interview with the AP ahead of more broadly announcing the charges that the McCloskeys’ actions risked creating a violent situation during an otherwise nonviolent protest. “It is illegal to wave weapons in a threatening manner — that is unlawful in the city of St. Louis,” Gardner said.
These charges come as the Governor of Missouri, Mike Parson, intimated that we would pardon the McCloskeys if they should be charged. I guess we will see if he will back up that promise.
This will likely be viewed as a political act by many, as Kim Gardner is currently running for re-election this year. It sure seems like a pretty ugly thing to do to two people who were protecting themselves against what they allege to be a mob of people breaking into their private gated community.
We will continue to follow developments in this case.
